Matthew has undertaken research in energy and environmental technology and policy since 1984 with earlyexperience developing award-winning renewable energy applications and low-cost electrical appliances in Africa.

With a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Southampton University, he took the Imperial College EnvironmentalTechnology MSc specialising in Energy Policy (1990-1991) and a subsequent PhD (1991-1995) modelling technical and policy options for air pollution abatement from the energy sector in Eastern Europe. His areas of research now are decentralised energy and waste systems, with assessment of the contributions of emerging technologies to a low carbon transition and wider policy objectives. Matthew is a member of Council of the British Institute of Energy Economics and is Vice President of the Energy Institute.
