Architects to debate design with waste management industry at Futuresource 2009

22 May 2009

News release

The challenges of incorporating waste and recycling facilities into new property developments will be debated next month when London ExCeL plays host to architects, planners and developers at the Futuresource 2009 conference and exhibition.

Taking place between 9-11 June, Futuresource is Europe's leading sustainability event, and on 11 June architects, planners, regenerators and property developers will meet with leading waste management experts to discuss how best to overcome some key waste management challenges, as part of an event titled 'Are Architects Rubbish at Designing for Rubbish?'.

In a session chaired by David Birkbeck, chief executive of Design for Homes, industry experts will give a short presentation about four award-winning schemes that display best practice when it comes to designing-in waste and recycling facilities and there will be a light-hearted look at what can go wrong.

Demonstrating the benefits of improving the dialogue between the waste and construction sectors, there will then be a debate with representatives from both sides. Steve Newman, head of design at HTA Architects, David Gillett, sales and marketing director of Taylor, Julian Gaylor, managing director of Envac UK Ltd and Eoin Keating, director of Jestico and Whiles Architects will discuss a range of topics including innovative waste and recycling containment solutions, how to deliver on PPS 10, PPS 12 and Section 106 requirements of Local Authority Planning for waste, recycling and aesthetics, and how to satisfy the Code for Sustainable Homes.

In addition to 'Are architects rubbish at designing for rubbish?', attendees will be able to visit exhibitors at Futuresource showcasing the latest in waste management design and a wide range of bins and waste collection systems for both internal and external use; from built-in residential kitchen bins to vacuum waste collections ideal for developments in excess of 1,000 dwellings.

Organised by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) in partnership with the Environmental Services Association (ESA), the Futuresource conference and exhibition will bring together over 300 exhibitors and an expected 8,000 delegates from a wide range of organisations involved in shaping the future of waste, recycling and resource management, particularly its potential to secure a more sustainable future, tackle climate change and boost UK plc's balance sheet.

Commenting on the event, Steve Lee, chief executive of CIWM said: "Building effective waste management systems into initial plans and standard practices is the way forward for the property industry. Sustainable practices can boost profits by cutting costs and increase competitiveness by reducing environmental impacts."

He added: "Futuresource offers the building industry an unrivalled opportunity to meet experts and suppliers from across the waste and recycling sector and will be a great investment in time and the future for architects and developers serious about capitalising on the economic and environmental benefits of designing in recycling and waste management."
